Anti-Tack (Paraffin Solution) is a crucial additive for gelcoats and polyester resins. It is specifically engineered to overcome the air-inhibition that naturally occurs with these materials, ensuring the final layer dries to a hard, workable finish while providing precise control over the surface luster.
Gelcoat to Topcoat Transformation: By adding this solution to standard gelcoat, practitioners can effectively create a "Topcoat" or "Flowcoat." This is essential for the final interior layer of a mold or part, where a smooth, non-sticky finish is required for handling or secondary sanding.
Gloss Level Management: Beyond its curing properties, the paraffin solution acts as a finishing tool, allowing for adjustable control over the gloss levels of the final laminate, ranging from a high-sheen finish to a more muted, satin appearance depending on the application technique.
Instructions
- Integration & Dosage: The paraffin solution must be thoroughly integrated into the resin or gelcoat before the addition of the MEK-catalyst. Standard Dosage: Add approximately 2% to 5% by weight to the liquid resin.
Mixing: Stir gently but thoroughly to ensure the paraffin is evenly dispersed. Avoid high-shear mixing that could trap excessive air.
Application Phase : Apply the modified mixture as your final "topcoat" layer. Vertical Surfaces: Ensure an even application to prevent the paraffin from sagging, which could result in an uneven finish. Atmospheric Conditions: For optimal results, apply in a stable environment. High humidity or extreme cold can affect the migration of the paraffin to the surface.
Post-Curing Treatment: Once the material has reached a full cure: Removal: The thin paraffin film remaining on the surface must be removed if further bonding or painting is required. This can be done with a light sanding or a solvent wipe (e.g., Acetone).
Polishing: If a high-gloss finish is desired, the cured surface can be buffed using professional polishing compounds.
Technical Security Note
The Anti-Stick solution should only be used for the final layer. Applying subsequent layers of resin over a paraffin-treated surface will result in delamination, as the wax acts as a permanent release agent.
