Food Safe Silicones - Processing Requirements
Some Smooth-On Platinum Silicones are certified for safe contact with food. Smooth-Sil™ 940, 950 and 960, the SORTA-Clear™ 18 - 37 & 40, and the Equinox™ Series are suitable for making baking molds and trays, ice cube trays, casting butter, chocolate, and other applications and can be used to produce food.
These materials have been tested by an independent laboratory to meet total extraction limits when properly processed and heat cured. Please refer to the technical bulletins of these materials for detailed processing instructions.
Post-Curing is Required
After the rubber mold has cured for 24 hours, it must be exposed to an oven at 100°C for 4 hours. Allow to cool and wash thoroughly with dish soap/water solution. Rinse well and let dry before using.
Compliance
The ingredients and ingredient levels in Smooth-Sil™ 940, 950, 960, the SORTA-Clear™ 18 - 37 & 40, and the Equinox™ Series comply with 21 CFR 177.2600, rubber articles for repeated use under the total extractive limits as indicated and published in the Code of Federal Regulations. FDA compliance does not mean that Smooth-Sil™ 940, 950 and 960, the SORTA-Clear™ 18 - 37 & 40, and the Equinox™ Series are FDA approved. To be approved, the user must also comply with all applicable FDA requirements. Compliance with 21 CFR 177.2600 does not allow the use of Smooth-Sil™ for making baby bottle nipples.
Baking Using a Mold
- Place mold on a baking sheet for more stability and handling.
- Do not expose to temperatures above 204°C.
- Do not place molds under the broiler.
- Silicone rubber cannot distribute heat evenly. Food in shallow molds will bake faster compared to baking in deeper molds. Thick sections will retain heat longer than thin sections. Check regularly for doneness when first using.
- Clean the molds with warm soapy water and a soft sponge and rinse thoroughly between batches or before storage. You can quickly dry the mold in an oven. Bake for 5 minutes at 150°C.
