EA-40® Transparent Laminating Epoxy Adhesive

EA-40 Clear Epoxy is an unfilled low-viscosity epoxy adhesive that can be spread easily in thin films that are almost transparent after curing. Mix ratio is 1:1 by volume. When mixed 2A:1B by volume, EA-40 will achieve greater heat resistance and improved physical properties.

EA-40 is versatile and can be used for many different assembly and repair applications ranging from electrical potting to jewelry assembly to repairing plumbing fixtures. Bow makers have come to know EA-40 as a tremendous laminating resin. EA-40 provides highly moisture resistant bonds meeting the performance requirements for Federal Specification MMM-A-188, Type III.

Instructions

A clean, dry surface is a necessary prerequisite for adhesive bonding. Adhesives will stick to either the surface of which a bond is desired or to that film of extraneous material directly on that surface. Rarely can a structural adhesive penetrate through surface contaminants to provide an optimum bond on an unclean surface.

Porous materials are simple to bond, provided they are dry. The surface should be sanded till clean and free from dust. Non-porous surfaces, such as found on metal and plastic materials, should be degreased, dried and roughened by sanding, sandblasting or chemical etching. The etched or sandblasted surfaces should be covered within a few hours of treatment to prevent contamination.

Handlers should wear clean cotton gloves to prevent body oils from contaminating the clean surfaces.

Epoxy adhesives do not perform well on metals such as nickel, chromium, tin or zinc nor on soft thermoplastics like polyethylene.

Because no two applications are quite the same, a small test application to determine suitability for your project is recommended if performance of this material is in question.

MEASURING & MIXING - Measure equal amounts of Parts A and B (or 2A:1B) by volume into a clean mixing container. Mixing tools and containers should be clean and made of metal, glass or plastic. After dispensing required amount of Parts A and B into mixing container, mix thoroughly for 3 minutes making sure that you scrape the sides and bottom of the mixing container several times.

Application - Apply to prepared surface and let cure for 24 hours. Applying mild heat will cure EA-40® faster – 150°F/65°C for 6 hours.

Post Curing
- After EA-40® has cured at room temperature, heating the epoxy to 150° F (65° C) for 4 to 8 hours will increase physical properties and performance. Let cool to room temp. before moving bonded substrates, machining, etc.

To Attain Maximum Heat Distortion Temperature - let cure for 24 hours at room temperature, heat cure for 2 hours at 250°F (122°C).

At mix ratio 1A:1B – HDT will be 163°F (73°C).

At mix ratio 2A:1B – HDT will be 217° F (103 °C)

Metalset® A4 Aluminum Filled Epoxy Adhesive

Metalset® A4 is a powerful epoxy adhesive that has been used for years by all branches of the U.S. Military as well as every major airline and auto manufacturer in the world. Metalset® A4 is used for hundreds of industrial bonding applications and offers excellent adhesion to porous or non-porous surfaces. It can be applied to vertical surfaces without sagging and cures overnight with negligible shrinking.

Once cured, Metal‌set® A4 offers good machining qualities (sanding, drilling, tapping), and resists alkalies, dilute acids and solvents. Applications include stopping leaks in pipes, valves and tanks (i.e. car gas tanks), bonding like and unlike surfaces, filling metal joints, dents, etc., anchoring bolts in wood, concrete, and repairing metal surfaces.

A clean, dry surface is essential for successful adhesive bonding. Porous materials are simple to bond, provided they are dry. The surface should be sanded till clean followed by wiping surface with solvent (acetone, MEK, mineral spirits). Let solvent evaporate fully before applying A4.

Non-porous surfaces (metals, plastics, coated woods) should be sanded, sandblasted or chemically etched. If sanding or sandblasting, follow with solvent wash. Let solvent evaporate fully before applying A4. Epoxy adhesives do not perform well on metals such as nickel, chromium, tin or zinc or on soft thermoplastics like polyethylene. An option would be to try a polyurethane adhesive (such as URE-BOND® from Smooth-On).

Because no two applications are quite the same, a small test application to determine suitability for your project is recommended if performance of this material is in question.

MEASURING, MIXING, APPLYING...
Metalset™ A4 is mixed one part A to one part B by weight or volume. If dispensing from tubes, squeeze out equal amounts from each tube. Try to be as accurate as possible. Mix thoroughly for 3 minutes to a uniform grey color (no streaks) and apply to prepared surface at a thickness of 1/32” - 1/16” (0.08cm - 0.16cm). Fit other surface over epoxy and apply even pressure using clamps or weights. Handling time is 4 hours. Full cure is 16 hours.

CURING...
Metalset™ A4 will cure in 16 hours at room temp. (73°F/23°C). Applying mild heat will cure A4 faster–150°F/65°C for 2 hours.
Post Curing - After A4 has cured at room temperature, heating the epoxy to 150°F (65°C) for 4 to 8 hours will increase physical properties and performance. Let cool to room temperature before moving bonded substrates, machining, etc.

Smooth-On MT13

Smooth-On MT-13® is a premium performance epoxy for applications requiring maximum holding power and water resistance. MT-13 is a two component epoxy adhesive cement which is mixed in equal parts by volume (100A/123B by weight) and gels in a few hours. MIXING AND APPLYING...

Measure equal amounts of Parts A and B (or 100A:123B by weight) and mix thoroughly for 3 minutes to a uniform color (no streaks). Apply to prepared surface at a thickness of 1/32” - 1/16” (0.08cm - 0.16cm). Fit other surface over epoxy and apply even pressure using clamps or weights until material cures.

CURING...
MT-13® will cure and reach handling strength in 16 hours at room temp. (73°F/23°C). Applying uniform mild heat will cure epoxy faster–150°F/65°C for 4 hours. Let cool to room temperature before moving bonded substrates.

Smooth-On Super Instant Epoxy Adhesive

Smooth-On Super Instant® Epoxy is a two component, clear adhesive designed to provide rapid bonding. When mixed in equal proportions - either by volume or by weight - curing takes place quickly enough to permit handling in 5 to 10 minutes at room temperature. Super Instant adheres to metals such as steel, aluminum and brass, to wood, glass, masonry and many hard plastics.

The practical spreading rate depends on a number of variables, such as: shape and size of object to be painted, the condition and profile of the substrate, the method of application, climatologic conditions and skill of labour.

URE-BOND® II is a premium performance urethane adhesive compound that offers a strong flexible bond between many different surfaces. URE-BOND is ideal for adhering polyurethane rubber and other polymer products to many types of substrates (such as plaster, wood, cement, stone) and non-porous materials (such as glass, hard plastics and a variety of metals).

URE-BOND® II has also been used to repair torn polyurethane molds on a limited basis (with proper surface preparation). Working time is 5 minutes at room temperature (72° F / 22° C). Once mixed and applied, URE-BOND® II takes about 60 minutes to cure and yields a strong, flexible bond.

Surface preparation - It is essential that the surface of both substrates to be bonded be absolutely clean and dry. Porous surfaces should be sanded until clean and any excess dust removed thoroughly. Non-porous surfaces should be degreased, dried and abraded by sanding, sandblasting or chemical etching - the etching being required for certain surfaces. Solvent wash the surface and let the solvent fully dry before applying adhesive.

MEASURING & MIXING...

Pre-mix Part B before dispensing and mixing with Part A. After dispensing equal amounts of Parts A and B into mixing container, mix thoroughly for 3 minutes making sure that you scrape the sides and bottom of the mixing container several times.

APPLYING, CURING & PERFORMANCE...

Pour or brush on to prepared surface. Position and affix other surface to substrate and hold fast or clamp together for 60 minutes. Cure time can be reduced by applying mild heat.

IMPORTANT: Shelf life of product is reduced after opening. Remaining product should be used as soon as possible. Immediately replacing the lids on both containers after dispensing product will help prolong the shelf life of the unused product. XTEND-IT® Dry Gas Blanket (available from Smooth-On) will significantly prolong the shelf life of unused liquid urethane products.
